Dreamy Guest Room – One Room Challenge Week 2

April 15, 2022

It’s One Room Challenge week two, and for the Dreamy Guest Room I’m doing things a little different this time around. For the past ORC’s, I usually worked on a specific project each week. This time, I’ve decided to just post my progress every week because, well, life! Between vacations, the farm, and other projects, things are pretty hectic right now so this ORC will definitely be a slow start and a strong finish.

Priming & Skim Coating:

So, what did I complete this week? Well, mostly just prep work. I primed the wall the piano is on because it was dark gray. It will be painted Simply White, my go-to white that is everywhere my house.

I also began skim coating the other two walls. Our walls are extremely textured so I’m skim coating to have a smooth surface for the wallpaper. This will ensure that it adheres properly and doesn’t look like garbage.

If you’ve never skim coated before, it’s actually a pretty fun process. You essentially just thin out joint compound and use a knockdown knife to smooth it out. After it has time to dry, just sand it smooth with a sanding block.

Make sure you wear a mask when sanding joint compound. It makes a lot of dust and you don’t want that in your lungs! Luckily, I had my new RZ Mask on hand. Love the fun print. (picture at top) Both of the skim coated walls will get a coat of primer after all that.

I know it sounds like a lot of trouble, but it really isn’t that bad. It’s a small price to pay for smooth wallpaper. If you remember, I had to skim coat the walls in the half bath when I did the “board” & batten. The plan is to do traditional paste wallpaper, which is something I’ve never done. I cannot wait to share the pattern I chose. It’s so good.

Painting the piano is probably next on the list. I still haven’t narrowed down the color but I can at least go ahead and get it primed and ready to go. I also ordered the turned wood bed legs from Etsy. My gears are spinning about the platform bed construction. I’m not using any plans just the old noggin.

We’re about to head out for vacay so I may combine the next two weeks. Not sure yet. Hang in there with me guys…we’ll get to the fun stuff very soon!
