Can you believe we are already halfway through the One Room Challenge? This week I focused on finishing up painting the cabinets and drawers and installing all the new hardware.
First, I used an orbital sander to rough everything up a bit so the primer would adhere to the surfaces. As recommended, I did try to hide the wood grain with joint compound but it didn’t make much of a difference. Apparently, my wood grain must not have been that bad so I’ll chalk that up as a win.
I also changed out all the visible outside hinges to concealed overlay using the Kreg Concealed Hinge Jig.
I did two coats of Valspar Bonding Primer|Sealer on everything. I also must’ve zoned out about this time because before I knew it I was painting the insides of the cabinets and drawers creating much more work for myself. Way to go.
The paint I used was INSL-X Cabinet Coat Trim & Cabinet Enamel in white satin. This stuff is thinner than regular paint which is great because it levels itself creating less brush and roller marks. It also is more durable than latex. I used a trim brush and then foam roller on the flat surfaces. It took about three thin coats. This wasn’t too difficult but next time I’ll definitely invest in a paint sprayer!
Painting is finished, now on to installing the hardware! I purchased the drawer pullsand the knobs on Amazon and they were a steal.
(A little note on installing the drawer pulls…the handles are great quality, the screws not so much. I had a few break off when installing even after drilling a pilot hole first. I would suggest swapping them out for a tougher screw, especially if you are screwing into oak or a hard wood like I was.)
These turned out better than I expected, especially since I didn’t use a sprayer. Choosing the right paint for the job really makes all the difference.
We’re halfway there guys…only four weeks left and there is still so much to do! I’ll be back next week with more progress! 🙂
