We’re almost to the finish line of this One Room Challenge! It’s week 5 and I saved the best project for last. This week I created a mountain accent wall using thin strips of wood lattice. I’ve never done an accent wall like this before so I wasn’t really sure where to start. The hardest part of this project was coming up with the design. I did a few rough sketches of the look I wanted then changed them as needed along the way. Once you get going though, things start moving a lot faster!
The first thing I did was change out the window trim. The stained oak was too distracting so I decided to go more simple with 1×3 boards topped with a 1×4 and 1×2. With the trim the same color as the wall, everything will blend in seamlessly.
I decided to start in the middle. I found the center of the wall between the window and the right wall, marked and just started building out from there.
A level and a speed square are an absolute necessity for a project like this! I made the mountain peaks with the speed square then used the level to make the longer lines. I used a chalk pencil for the lines.
Here is a close up of the wood lattice I used. A lot of people use thicker material for these accent walls but I wanted something more low profile. They cost about $5 per strip and I purchased 8 of them from Lowe’s and had plenty with a little to spare. The best thing about them is they are very straight! So important.
Once I got the three main mountains up, I started playing around with the design of the rest of the boards and changing things as I went. I don’t feel like there is an exact science to this, just go with what looks good to you. I used Liquid Nails and a nail gun to attach the wood strips to the wall. Check for level again before nailing.
I repeated a lot of the same spacing measurements as I went to make things look cohesive. I also decided to add some horizontal lines just to break everything up a bit. I think it looks like the horizon and I love it.
I couldn’t be happier with how this mountain accent wall turned out. With everything painted the same color, the mountains are just subtle enough to not be overwhelming.
I can’t wait to show you guys the final room reveal soon! Stay tuned.

What kind of saw for the cuts and I know you said a speed square-how did you use that to make your mountain peaks?
I used my miter saw to make all the cuts but if you don’t have one a circular saw or even a miter box would do fine. Those lattice strips are very thin and you could easily hand saw them! Hard to tell from the pic but I got that large orange speed square and traced it with a chalk pencil so I would have a perfect triangular mountain peak. I just extended the chalk pencil lines down from there once I had my peaks.
Hi! What kind of wood did you use for this project? 1×2’s or smaller? Thanks!!
I wanted something more low profile so I used thin trim strips…got it at Lowe’s in the wood trim section but I believe Home Depot has it as well. May have been called wood lattice strips. I think it was 1″ wide and maybe 1/2″ thick. So easy to work with!
Do you happen to have a direct link to the lattice you used? I really like the low profile appearance of the ones you used, but I can’t seem to find anything 1/2″ by 1″ at Lowe’s or Home Depot under $10/piece.

When I did this project, it was before all the lumber prices went sky high. I paid about $5 each at the time.
What’s the wall color?
It’s called Pine Mountain by Behr.
What size wall was this done on 🙂
We have low ceilings, only 90″ high and the wall width is almost exactly 12 feet.
Hello!
I love this! How did you attach the strips to the wall? Glue? Nails?
Thank you! I used Liquid Nails and a nail gun. These strips are so thin though you could probably get away with just using the nail gun.
What color paint did you use?
Pine Mountain by Behr
What size speed square did you use?
It’s a Swanson 12″
