DIY Spray Painted Vases

October 8, 2020

DIY spray painted vases are all over Instagram right now so naturally I had to give this one a try. If you don’t have any old vases lying around, rest assured that there are plenty of thrift stores nearby with an abundance of them just waiting for a new home. There is no telling how many I donated or put in yard sales over the years and I really kick myself that I didn’t figure this out sooner. After scanning my house, I found a couple of candidates just screaming for a makeover. This quick project only took some inexpensive supplies and a few hours! Let’s get into it.

These are the vases I will be updating. I have had them for many years and, while they aren’t hideous, they’re just not really my taste anymore. Hope you’re not mad that I’m about to hide these swirls!

This is the spray paint. I found both of these at our local Walmart but they can also be purchased on Amazon and I’ll link to those at the bottom of this post.

The first thing I did was spray the white chalk paint on the upper portion of the vase. This chalk paint has great coverage! I did two coats allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Then, I measured how far up I wanted the bottom textured portion to go. This will vary depending on the size of your vase. This one is ginormous so I went 4″ up.

Next, I used painter’s tape where I made my mark to section off the bottom half of the vase so it would have a nice crisp line.

I wrapped a plastic bag around the upper portion and taped it tight to protect it from overspray. It took at several coats of the textured spray paint to get the right coverage. Hold the can pretty far away and build up the coverage. It tends to glob up if you get too close. The trick here is more light coats are better than fewer thick coats. Make sure you allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.

FYI-When I removed the tape, I had a few spots where it peeled off some of the white paint. To fix this, take a sheet of paper or that plastic bag and hold it tight on the line where the bottom portion starts and this will allow you to touch up the white without spraying the bottom.

Here they are! I love them and they fit in so much better with my current decor situation. I’m off to the thrift store now to find some more vases. 😉
